Playoff seedings on the line in weekend NFL contests

The big thing for NFL bettors to figure out this weekend is who’s going to play and who’s going to play to win? With Green Bay having locked up the NFC 1-seed, are Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams going to go against Detroit? Is 2-12 Jacksonville (+15½) going to make any effort to beat an Indianapolis team that needs the win? How many players will be in Covid protocols by the weekend? One game with a potential wild card spot on the line is the Chargers vs. Raiders, a classic matchup from the old AFL for those of you old enough to remember announcers Curt Gowdy and Al DeRogatis. The Raiders are underdogs at home + 2½.

Georgia vs. Alabama in the National Championship Game, Monday on ESPN

After pummeling their Ohio opponents in the semifinals, the SEC takes center stage Monday night in Indianapolis as No. 1 Alabama faces No. 3 Georgia for the national championship. The Tide rolled over the Bulldogs 41-24 on Dec. 4, and Georgia coach Kirby Smart has never beaten mentor Nick Saban. BetDSI has Georgia as a slight favorite giving 2½ points, with an over/under of 52. Georgia is -145 on the moneyline and ‘Bama is +125, and you don’t get a + number with the Crimson Tide very often. Think the offenses are going to come out firing? The over/under for the 1st quarter is only 10½.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Saturday and Sunday

After a Wild Card round that was mostly blowouts, the Divisional round should lead to more competitive games and better late-game coaching decisions. No double-digit spreads this week. Saturday pits the Bengals + 3½ at the Titans, followed by the 49ers +6 at the Packers. Sunday offers the Rams +3 at the Buccaneers, followed by the Bills + 2½ at the Chiefs. The over/unders are all in the range of 48 points except for Bills/Chiefs, which is at 55. Remember to check the weather – mid-January in Green Bay or Kansas City could be a factor, not to mention rain in Florida, and beware the ever-present Covid protocols list.
